Remote Work

Find legitimate remote roles, avoid scams, get paid safely, and work well across time zones.

Introduction

What this covers

Remote work removes the requirement to be physically present, which makes it one of the most realistic routes to international income for Afghan women.

It also attracts scams. Knowing the warning signs is as important as knowing the job boards.

Why it matters

  • You can work for employers in other countries without leaving home.
  • Remote roles are often paid in stronger currencies and reward written communication.
  • The skills that make remote work possible — writing, self-management, digital tools — transfer everywhere.

Step by step

How to do it, in order

01

Search the right boards

Remote OK, We Work Remotely, NoDesk and Wellfound, plus LinkedIn and Indeed with the remote filter saved as an alert.

02

Check you are eligible

Look for "work from anywhere" rather than "remote (US only)", and check the stated time-zone overlap.

03

Prepare a remote-ready profile

Employers want evidence of written clarity and independence: a portfolio, a public profile and clear examples.

04

Agree payment before starting

Confirm the amount, currency, schedule and route (Payoneer, Wise, bank transfer) in writing.

05

Set up your working day

A fixed schedule, a quiet corner, a backup internet plan, and clear working hours shared with your team.

06

Communicate proactively

Over-communicate progress in writing. In remote teams, silence reads as no progress.

Common mistakes

  • Paying any fee for 'training', 'equipment' or 'registration' — legitimate employers never ask.
  • Accepting work with no written scope, deadline or rate.
  • Sharing bank details or ID documents before verifying the organisation exists.
  • Ignoring time-zone requirements and missing every meeting.

Best practices

  • Verify the employer on LinkedIn and their own website before replying.
  • Never move an interview entirely to a personal messaging app with no company identity.
  • Keep a shared written record of every agreement.
  • Learn the common tools: Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Trello or Asana.
