How to do it, in order

Start with who you know

Teachers, classmates, former colleagues and community members are your first network.

Write short, specific messages

Say who you are in one line, why you are writing to them specifically, and ask one clear question. Never attach a CV first.

Ask for advice, not a job

'How did you move into monitoring and evaluation?' gets answered. 'Can you get me a job?' does not.

Join communities

Professional groups, alumni networks, online study circles and free mentorship platforms.

Follow up and give back

Thank people, tell them what you did with their advice, and share useful things with your network.

Common mistakes

Long first messages that ask for too much.
Contacting people only when you need something.
Never replying after someone answers.
Assuming a single message failing means the approach does not work — response rates are naturally low.
